China From TikTok: Sky Decks, Glass Bridges, Old Towns
Height is the recurring subject in the Chinese posts: observation decks, glass platforms over gorges and stone pillars rising out of forest. Five places share the top spot with two posts each: the 604-meter Canton Tower, the city of Chongqing, the cliffside waterfall town of Furong Town, an aquarium with beluga whales, and the sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
Three cities hold most of the urban material. Guangzhou and Qingyuan have four places each, and Chongqing has three. The rest are single places spread across the country, from the Terracotta Army in Lintong to the walled old town in Pingyao County and the Nalati meadows in Xinjiang. Yunnan appears twice, through the Hani rice terraces and Shangri-La City.
Chongqing and Guangzhou from above
Chongqing is posted for its stacked, multi-level streets, the monorail that runs through Liziba station and night views along the Yangtze. Two places there give the view from the top: the Chongqing World Financial Center deck on the 73rd and 74th floors, looking over the meeting of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, and Raffles City Chongqing, eight towers joined by the Crystal skyway. In Guangzhou, the Canton Tower adds a skywalk and a Ferris wheel to its deck and lights up in changing LED colors at night, and Grandview Polar Ocean World is an aquarium inside a shopping mall.
Gulongxia and the Qingyuan thrill rides
Qingyuan's four places lean toward adrenaline. The Gulongxia area holds a 6,063-meter rafting course, open April to October, where the post advises wearing the life jacket and expecting to get completely soaked. It also has a 302-meter cantilevered glass platform over a waterfall gorge and the Flying Car, a 4.8 km mountain coaster across three peaks. Nearby, Dongtian Fairyland adds a boat ride on an underground river, a large sinkhole and a glass skywalk inside a cave.
Old towns and long views
For history, the Terracotta Army museum in Lintong comes with a clear tip: arrive at 8:30 AM to beat the tour groups, about 40 minutes by taxi from central Xi'an. Pingyao Ancient City is a walled town of Ming and Qing streets, and the post urges going before commercialization changes it. Maijishan Grottoes stacks 194 caves of Buddhist sculpture up a cliff. For landscapes, Qingshan Lake near Hangzhou has a forest of bald cypress growing from the water, best lit 8 to 10 AM or 3 to 5 PM, and the Hani rice terraces in Yunnan change color with the light.
