Things to Do Around Teguise in Northern Lanzarote

The seven places saved under Teguise describe the north of Lanzarote: volcanic, windy and quiet. Jameos del Agua turns a lava tube into a lake, garden and auditorium. Volcán de la Corona is a 30-minute climb to a crater rim. Playa de Famara is three kilometers of surf beach under the Famara cliffs, and Mirador de Guinate looks from the top of those cliffs toward La Graciosa.

The villages complete the picture: Teguise, the island's former capital in the highlands, Haría at the northern end, and Punta Mujeres on the coast with its natural rock pools. Only Jameos del Agua charges entry, and since the posts add no commentary, the descriptions below rely on each listing.

Volcanic landscapes

Jameos del Agua is priced as moderate. Inside the volcanic tube there is a lake with endemic blind crabs, an emerald pool and gardens, a natural auditorium and the Casa de los Volcanes museum, plus evening events called Noches de Jameos. Volcán de la Corona has a crater 400 meters deep and the Malpaís de la Corona lava fields around it, inside a protected natural park; the rim takes about 30 minutes on foot. Mirador de Guinate is free, 400 meters up on the Famara cliff, with the islands of the Chinijo Archipelago below.

Famara and the villages

Playa de Famara mixes sand with volcanic pebbles and has no beach bars, strong wind and steady surf, which makes it a base for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing; the water quality is rated excellent. Punta Mujeres, in the municipality of Haría, is a small coastal village known for its volcanic swimming pools and close to Jameos del Agua. Teguise sits in the north-central highlands and was once known for cochineal production.
