Worth it?
Basalt columns 20 to 30 meters high line a turquoise glacial river here, and there are two ways to see them: hiking trails from the west side parking area, or the viewing platform at Grund. Stuðlagilfoss waterfall is close by. The canyon is in East Iceland, far from the usual Reykjavik day trips, so it fits a longer road trip around the island better than a quick detour.
Before you go
- Park on the west side if you want to hike into the canyon.
- Use the viewing platform at Grund for an easier look.
- Add Stuðlagilfoss, the waterfall nearby.
