Things to Do in Graz From TikTok: Hill, Parks, a Palace

Graz in the videos is mostly an outdoor city. The steps up the Schlossberg, the hill with the clock tower at the center of town, are the first walk creators point to, followed by a lap of the Hilmteich pond on the edge of the Leechwald forest and the palace park at Schloss Eggenberg. Three city parks fill in the rest of the green: the Stadtpark, the Burggarten beside Graz Castle and the Augarten.

The Graz set is small, 12 places in all. Four are nature spots and three are hotels; the rest are a bakery, a coffee shop, the palace, the pond and the Rosenhain sports area. Most of the outdoor places are free. Three places, two hotels and a coffee shop, line up on the Grieskai, and the creator notes are short and practical: walk up the stairs, take a walk around the water, see the grounds.

Hill, parks and the pond

The Schlossberg can be climbed on foot, as one creator does, or ridden up on the Schloßbergbahn funicular, and the top has the Uhrturm clock tower, the Graz Museum Schlossberg and views over the city. Below it, the Stadtpark is the largest park in Graz, an English-style garden with a duck pond, a music pavilion and a fountain that looks toward the clock tower. The Burggarten holds more than 120 rare tree species beside the castle, and the Augarten has a skatepark, a playground and a dog park. Hilmteich has boats on the pond, forest trails and ice skating in winter.

Schloss Eggenberg

The palace on Eggenberger Allee is a UNESCO World Heritage site with 24 preserved state rooms, including the Planet Hall with its original 17th-century furnishings, plus the Alte Galerie art museum and an archaeology museum. The one creator note says to make sure you visit the grounds, and the palace park is extensive. It is the only sight in the Graz set with an entry price, listed as moderate, and its record mentions historical breakfast experiences.

Coffee, bread and where to stay

Bäckerei Sorger on Sporgasse bakes from recipes dating to the 17th century and serves breakfast, organic lunch dishes and organic milk ice cream. Tribeka at Grieskai 2 is the specialty coffee stop. The three hotels all have history: Grand Hôtel Wiesler, next door on the Grieskai, has 102 rooms with restored vintage furniture and hand-painted walls; Hotel Das Weitzer, a little further along, has 204 rooms, a Styrian restaurant and a coffee house; and the Palais-Hotel Erzherzog Johann occupies a former Baroque palace near the main square, with a winter garden and the Ernst Fuchs Bar.

Good to know

Walk or ride. One creator simply takes the stairs to the top, and the Schloßbergbahn funicular is the other option. At the summit are the Uhrturm clock tower, the Graz Museum Schlossberg and panoramic views over the city. The hill itself is free to visit.
