Austria From TikTok: Alpine Lakes, Gorges and Graz
Turquoise water is the thread through most Austrian posts. The two most posted places are both Tyrolean lakes: Blindsee, known for crystal-clear water and submerged tree trunks, and Seebensee, a hiking lake near Ehrwald. Around them sit gorges, waterfalls, mountain huts and a couple of castles, and cities play a smaller part.
The exception is Graz, which has 12 places, more than any other Austrian city here: parks like the Burggarten beside the castle, the Hilmteich pond, a bakery on Sporgasse with recipes going back to the 17th century, and two hotels on the Grieskai. Ebbs follows with six, including two stops in the Kaisertal valley, then Zell am See with four. Vienna has just three.
Lakes in Tyrol and Styria
Blindsee has a 4.7 km circular trail and no facilities, and the record notes it is reached by toll road from Biberwier. Seebensee pairs with the nearby Seebenalm hut. Higher up, Drachensee lies below the Coburger Hütte, a hut at 1,920 meters with dormitory beds for 75 and summit tours to the Sonnenspitze. Grüner See in Styria is the odd one out: a karst lake that fills with snowmelt and submerges its own parkland and trails, with high water in May and June. Swimming and diving there are strictly prohibited, so it is a lake for walking around.
Gorges and waterfalls
Krimmler Wasserfälle is Austria's highest waterfall, dropping 380 meters over three tiers, with a 4 km trail of viewing platforms and the best flow in late June and July. The gorges each offer something different. Liechtensteinklamm near St. Johann im Pongau has walls up to 300 meters high along a 4 km path and charges admission. Kitzlochklamm in Taxenbach adds via ferrata routes and opens from May to October, and the Leutascher Geisterklamm has a suspension bridge plus 'gorge ghost' stations aimed at children.
Huts, castles and the Grossglockner road
The food note that stands out comes from Berghof, the oldest mountain inn in the Kaisertal, reached only on foot in about 40 minutes: the creator calls the Kaiserschmarrn worth the hike and points to the homemade lemonade. Nearby, the Kapelle zum Heiligen Antonius is a 30-minute walk that works year-round. The Grossglockner-Hochalpenstraße runs 48 km with 36 hairpins, and the post says the payoff comes once you clear the treeline. One caution: the video of Festung Hohenwerfen uses AI-generated interiors, and only its exterior shots show the real fortress.
Good to know
It depends on the lake. Blindsee is described as good for swimming and is known among divers for its submerged tree trunks, though it has no facilities. Grüner See in Styria strictly prohibits swimming and diving. Seebensee and Drachensee are reached on hiking trails, and their records focus on color and mountain views rather than swimming.
