Austria's Gorges, Peaks and Viewpoints in Creators' Videos

Gorges dominate this set. Seven of the 16 places are a Klamm or canyon, five of them from a single post about the gorges around the Salzburg region, plus the Leutascher Geisterklamm in Tyrol and Ötschergräben in Lower Austria. Most of the gorges are paid, and two of them open only from May to October.

The rest splits between high ground and city green. Three summits come with honest notes about effort, from a two-hour hike to Naunspitze to a T4 trail on Wildenkogel that needs snow-free conditions, and the Grossglockner road delivers the big Alpine view from a car. Graz adds four places from one local's guide, led by the Schlossberg and its clock tower, and Teufelswasser in Hinterglemm is the easy family day.

Where creators go

  1. Grossglockner-HochalpenstraßeScenic Overlook · Lienz

A 48 km high Alpine road through Hohe Tauern National Park to the Pasterze glacier, filmed for a post about cinematic European drives. The creator counts 36 hairpins and says the real payoff comes once you clear the treeline and Austria's highest peak appears. The Edelweissspitze sits at 2,504 m, and marmots and ibex live along the route. It is the one expensive entry on this page.

  2. LiechtensteinklammNatural Landmark · St Johann im Pongau

A gorge near St. Johann im Pongau with rock walls up to 300 meters high and a 4 km walking path along the bottom. It is one of five gorges in the same German-language post about Klammen you should visit in Austria. The visit is a walk along the narrow path between the walls, and an admission fee applies.

  3. ÖtschergräbenCanyon View · Wilhelmsburg

A gorge system cut by the Ötscherbach in Lower Austria, nicknamed Austria's Grand Canyon in the Czech post that features it. The trails are well surfaced and pass three waterfalls: Lassingfall, Mirafall and Schleierfall. The Ötscherhias snack station is on the way. It opens from May to October, with a small entrance fee.

  4. Leutascher GeisterklammNatural Landmark · Leutasch

The Spirit Gorge at Leutasch in Tyrol, with a suspension bridge, a waterfall trail and secured paths. Information stations themed around a gorge ghost are aimed at children, which makes it the most family-oriented of the gorges here. Unlike the others, it is listed as free.

  5. NaunspitzeMountain · Ebbs

A 1,633 m summit in the Kaiser Mountains above Ebbs, with views over the Inn Valley. The creator, posting a Kaiserschmarren hike for a day out from Munich, says it takes about two hours and you should be comfortable with heights, since there are grade I to II climbing sections. Best from May to November. Vorderkaiserfeldenhütte is the access point.

  6. WildenkogelMountain · Zell am See

A 3,021 m peak in the Venediger Group within Hohe Tauern National Park. The creator asks whether Austria looks like Middle-earth and admits the route is hard work despite being only about 5 km. The trail is rated T4 and reaches a saddle at 2,870 m; going on to the summit needs good conditions and no snow.

  7. SchlossbergMountain · Graz

The hill in the center of Graz, topped by the clock tower (Uhrturm) and home to the Graz Museum Schlossberg. A funicular runs up, but the local creator's tip is to take the stairs to the top. Views over the city are free.

  8. TeufelswasserNatural Landmark · Hinterglemm

A family water play area in the Talschluss of Hinterglemm, with interactive stations along a stream and free admission all summer. The Czech creator recommends it as an undemanding trip for the whole family, and the note adds that it is great for kids and dogs to cool off.

More nature and viewpoints in Austria

More gorges in the Salzburg region

The same post that features Liechtensteinklamm pins four more gorges, each with a moderate price level.

  • Kitzlochklamm in Taxenbach: paths, waterfalls and via ferrata routes for experienced climbers, open May to October.
  • Seisenbergklamm in Weißbach bei Lofer: wooden walkways past waterfalls, with the Klammstüberl serving organic regional food.
  • Sigmund-Thun-Klamm in Kaprun: a 320-meter path through a 32-meter-deep gorge of whirlpools and potholes, with online tickets.
  • Vorderkaserklamm in St. Martin bei Lofer: a protected gorge known for its orchids.

The harder Kaiser summit

The Kaiserschmarren hike post offers a second peak for experienced walkers. Pyramidenspitze, at 1,997 m the second highest summit of the Zahmer Kaiser, is what the creator calls the pro route: about three hours, with via ferrata sections, best from June to October. It needs sure footing and a head for heights, and the Vorderkaiserfelden hut offers overnight stays.

Parks in Graz

A creator who has lived in Graz for over ten years includes three parks besides the Schlossberg. Stadtpark Graz is the largest, an English-style garden with a duck pond, a music pavilion and a fountain facing the Uhrturm. Burggarten Graz beside the castle holds more than 120 rare tree species and a renovated Orangerie. Augarten is the practical one, with a playground, skatepark, dog park and picnic tables.

Good to know

Five come from one post about gorges in the Salzburg region: Liechtensteinklamm, Kitzlochklamm, Seisenbergklamm, Sigmund-Thun-Klamm and Vorderkaserklamm. Separate posts cover the Leutascher Geisterklamm in Tyrol and Ötschergräben in Lower Austria, which is nicknamed Austria's Grand Canyon. Most charge admission; the Geisterklamm is listed as free.
