Athens From TikTok: Bougatsa, Bakeries and Tavernas
Bakeries carry as much weight as restaurants in the creators' Athens: 12 of the 40 places on the site are bakeries and dessert shops, the same number as restaurants. The two most posted places, with two posts each, show that split. Atlantikos on Avliton serves Aegean seafood meze, and the posts point to mussels saganaki, fava with marinated anchovies and a dakos salad, with a warning about long queues. Bougatsadiko Psirri on Miaouli bakes custard bougatsa with powdered sugar and savory pies with feta or spinach.
Every other place has a single post, which spreads the picture across the center. Krinos, a bakery behind the Varvakios market with a 1923 interior, is posted for loukoumades. Oinomageireio Ipeiros has cooked inside the central market since 1898 and opens at 6 AM, Sundays excepted. At the Acropolis, the advice is practical: sunscreen, a hat and water in summer.

A bougatsa and pie run
The bakery posts are detailed enough to plan a morning around. Makedonikon on Solonos is billed as the oldest spot in Athens for bougatsa; a creator recommends the feta, spinach and semolina custard versions, but found only three types ready early in the morning. Mam on Pesmazoglou is the fallback when your filling is not ready elsewhere, and its mince meat bougatsa stands out. At Krinos, the loukoumades come with honey and walnuts, or with soft serve. For bread, 72H Artisanal Bakery ferments its sourdough for 72 hours, and Overoll Croissanterie on Praxitelous calls itself the first croissanterie in Greece.
Tavernas and small plates
The taverna posts favor places that are easy to miss. Avli sits in a yard behind a graffiti-covered door in Psirri; order several small dishes to share, and use GPS to find the entrance. Diporto is a basement with no sign next to the central market, where an early breakfast brings fava, chickpea stew and grilled sardines. Evgenia, a family-run ouzeri in Plaka, is posted for octopus and stewed chickpeas. O Thanasis in Monastiraki, open since 1964, is known for its yogurt kebab, and one creator calls it touristy and huge but not overrated.
Drinks, books and a rooftop
For drinks, Cinque Wine & Deli runs tastings of Greek grape varieties with local cheeses, and Drupes & Spritzeria pours spritz cocktails for 6 euros. Birdman on Voulis is a Japanese bar and grill with yakitori, highballs and a vinyl collection. Mona Athens, a boutique hotel in Psirri, has a members-only rooftop facing the Acropolis. Hyper Hypo near Monastiraki sells art, design and photography books and holds exhibitions and talks in its project space.
Good to know
Bougatsadiko Psirri on Miaouli is the most posted, with custard bougatsa that you can top with cinnamon or Nutella. Makedonikon on Solonos is described as the oldest bougatsa spot in the city, and Mam on Pesmazoglou is recommended for its mince meat version. Krinos also serves traditional bougatsa alongside its loukoumades.
