Greece From TikTok: Crete, Athens and Island Coves

Breakfast is where the Greek posts start. The most posted place on MapDreamy's Greece map is Bougatsa Iordanis in Chania, a bakery its record dates to 1922. One creator notes the menu has only two items, so order both and have them with a frappe. In Athens, Bougatsadiko Psirri does custard bougatsa with powdered sugar, cinnamon or Nutella, plus savory versions with feta or spinach.

Past the pastry, the 147 places lean toward Crete and the Aegean. Athens has the most entries (40), then the Cyclades islands (Milos, Kimolos, Sifnos and Paros) and Chania with 20. The videos keep returning to clear water you have to work for: a steep scramble down to Seitan Limania, a boat to the uninhabited island of Polyaigos, the car-free village of Loutro on Crete.

Chania and western Crete

In Chania's Old Town, one creator's advice is to walk to the lighthouse at sunset and look out for Harry, the turtle in the harbor. Two harbor restaurants appear: Amphora, where a creator came for the food and stayed for the views, and Arismari, where the shrimp saganaki is the order. Out of town, Seitan Limania Beach needs a steep 10 to 15 minute hike and has no facilities, only goats. Balos Lagoon charges an entrance fee; one creator took a tour bus and hiked down for the view from above. At the Biolea estate in Astrikas, olive oil is pressed on traditional stone mills.

Eating in Athens

Avli, in Psirri like Bougatsadiko, is a taverna in a yard behind a graffiti-covered door. It is easy to miss, so a creator suggests using GPS, and the dishes are small, so order several. Atlantikos serves Aegean seafood meze, with mussels saganaki, garlic anchovies and seafood pasta named as standouts and a warning to arrive early because of long queues. 72H Artisanal Bakery ferments its sourdough for 72 hours. For souvlaki, Achilleas in Dafni has loyal regulars, but it closes at weekends and does not deliver.

Islands by boat and through a cave

Polyaigos, the largest uninhabited island in the Cyclades by its record, is reached only by boat or water taxi; one creator sails there for what they call the clearest water in the Cyclades. On Milos, Alogomandra Beach lets you wade through a rock cave into a shallow inlet, with no facilities. Two Milos restaurants appear too: Astakas in the fishing village of Klima, for a sunset dinner and stuffed squid, and Archontoula in Plaka for a long lunch. On Santorini, Aktaion in Firostefani is known for tomato fritters and fava. Farther north, Alyki Salt Lake on Lemnos is a birdwatching spot for flamingos.

Good to know

Start with bougatsa at Bougatsa Iordanis in Chania or Bougatsadiko Psirri in Athens. Creators also name shrimp saganaki at Arismari in Chania, mussels saganaki and garlic anchovies at Atlantikos in Athens, tomato fritters and fava at Aktaion on Santorini, and stuffed squid at Astakas on Milos. At Apiri in Heraklion, one creator singles out the sauces.
