Sights in Greece From TikTok: Athens Temples and Cretan History

Athens holds half of this set. The Acropolis and the Temple of Hephaestus come from one creator's trip, and the Alekos Fassianos Museum from another's list of favorite places in the city. Crete adds two: the Venetian lighthouse in Chania's harbor and the fortress islet of Spinalonga, listed here as Kalydon. A sixth place, Kastro, is a Venetian fortress above the village of Plaka.

This is a history-heavy list. Every entry is an ancient site, a Venetian structure or an art museum, and there are no beaches or viewpoints for their own sake, although the two fortresses come with views. Prices are moderate for the Athens sites and Spinalonga, and the Chania lighthouse and Kastro are free. Start in Athens, where three of the six are close enough to share an itinerary.

Where creators go

  1. Acropolis of AthensHistoric Site · Athens

The fifth-century BC citadel on its rock above Athens, with the Parthenon and the Erechtheion, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The record's advice is plain and useful: wear sunscreen and a hat, and stay hydrated in summer. It comes from a creator who still cannot stop talking about their Athens trip.

  2. Temple of HephaestusHistoric Site · Athens

A Doric temple on Agoraios Kolonos hill inside the Ancient Agora, listed as the best-preserved ancient Greek temple in the world. Its architect, Iktinos, also designed the Parthenon, and it later served as a church. From the same Athens trip post, and an easy pairing with the Acropolis.

  3. Alekos Fassianos MuseumArt Museum · Athens

A museum on Neofitou Metaxa dedicated to the painter Alekos Fassianos, in a building designed with architect Kyriakos Krokos. The works run from 1956 to the end of his life. It is a short walk from Larissa station and appears in a creator's list of places they loved most in Athens.

  4. Chania LighthouseLighthouse · Chania

A 16th-century lighthouse at the entrance of Chania's Venetian harbor, one of the oldest in the world, with an unusual three-part tower. You walk out to it from the old town along the harbor, and the view looks back over the waterfront. Free, and a listed archaeological site.

  5. KalydonRuins · Spinalonga

Listed as Kalydon, this is the small dry islet of Spinalonga off Crete, with Venetian fortress walls and the ruins of a former leper colony. Boats run from Plaka or Elounda. The creator calls it a small fortified island with a fascinating history, and the record notes its heavy, poignant atmosphere.

Sunset at Kastro

Kastro is a 13th-century Venetian fortress at the highest point of Plaka village, reached by a steep climb through whitewashed alleys to the Church of Panagia Thalassitra. The creator's one-line tip is to climb up for the best sunset on the island. The views run 360 degrees over the island and the Aegean, and entry is free.

Good to know

The Acropolis with the Parthenon and Erechtheion, the Temple of Hephaestus in the Ancient Agora, and the Alekos Fassianos Museum near Larissa station. The first two come from the same trip post and work as one morning of ancient sites.
