Nature in Iceland From TikTok: Stokksnes, Ice Caves and Canyons

Stokksnes leads by a long way, with eight posts of the Vestrahorn mountain reflected in black sand. Behind it, Kirkjufell, Stuðlagil and Múlagljúfur have two each. Geographically the set runs around the Ring Road: the Golden Circle near Selfoss, the south coast at Vík, the glacier lagoon area, the East Fjords at Egilsstaðir and Kirkjufell on the Snæfellsnes side.

Many of these places are free, but the costs cluster in winter. The two ice caves are expensive Super Jeep trips, Stokksnes charges an entrance fee at the Viking Café, and Kerið has a small fee of 600 ISK. Several creators bundle them into 'save this for Iceland' guides, which is a good sign they work as a road trip list. Stokksnes and the eastern canyons take the most driving, while Kerið and Þingvellir make an easy Golden Circle pair.

Where creators go

  1. StokksnesNatural Landmark

A privately owned headland on Iceland's southeast coast with the jagged Vestrahorn above black sand and tidal lagoons. Entry is paid at the Viking Café or a gate machine, and there is a Viking Village film set on site. One honest note: a popular video uses an AI mirror effect to fake a double reflection, so expect a single one in real life.

  2. KirkjufellMountain · Borgarnes

The cone-shaped mountain photographed with Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall in front, one of the most recognizable views in the country. Two posts include it, one in a full Iceland itinerary. Access is free, and the area around it is open for walks.

  3. Stuðlagil CanyonNatural Landmark · Egilsstaðir

A canyon in East Iceland, near Egilsstaðir, lined with basalt columns 20 to 30 meters high above a turquoise glacial river. Trails start from the west side parking area, there is a viewing platform at Grund, and Stuðlagilfoss waterfall is nearby. Free, and a two-post favorite in Iceland guides.

  4. Múlagljúfur CanyonCanyon View

A remote gorge with steep cliffs and several waterfalls, reached on a hiking trail away from the main crowds. The record suggests visiting between late April and October. Free, with two posts, one simply titled 'Iceland canyons'. A good swap for a busier stop in the southeast.

  5. Crystal Ice CaveNatural Landmark

A natural ice cave in Breiðamerkurjökull, part of Vatnajökull, reached by Super Jeep from the Jökulsárlón area. The blue ice shifts every year. The creator's note matters most: it is only possible in cold winter conditions and only with professional guides. Expensive, and worth booking around the weather.

  6. KeriðNatural Landmark · Selfoss

A 6,500-year-old volcanic crater 55 meters deep, with red rock slopes and a blue-green lake at the bottom. A path circles the rim, and there is a 600 ISK entry fee. It sits on the Golden Circle near Selfoss, so it is an easy add on the same day as Þingvellir.

  7. ReynisdrangarNatural Landmark

Basalt sea stacks rising 66 meters off Reynisfjara black sand beach, tied to local folklore about trolls turned to stone. The record carries a clear warning about dangerous sneaker waves, so stay well back from the water. Free, and in the post it is one of the coastal sights along a longer road trip.

  8. Þingvellir National ParkNational Park · Mosfellsbaer

The rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart, with the Almannagjá gorge and the site of Iceland's historic Alþing assembly. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and free to visit. A staple of Golden Circle days and of the Iceland guide that features it.

Ice caves: winter only, guided only

Two ice caves appear, and both are expensive guided trips. The Crystal Ice Cave near Jökulsárlón has blue ice that changes each year and depends on cold winter temperatures. Katla Ice Cave is reached by Super Jeep from Vík across black sand lava fields, and is known for black and blue 'Dragon Glass' ice. If you are on the south coast already, Katla pairs with Reynisdrangar.

Good to know

Stokksnes, with the Vestrahorn mountain over black sand, leads with eight posts. Kirkjufell, Stuðlagil Canyon and Múlagljúfur Canyon have two each. The Crystal Ice Cave, Katla Ice Cave, Kerið, Reynisdrangar and Þingvellir National Park complete the set with one post apiece.
