Bologna on TikTok: Gelato, Mortadella and Old Trattorias

Gelato is the one thing creators in Bologna keep stopping for. The most posted place in the city is Cremeria Cavour on Piazza Cavour, whose Alice flavor is mascarpone with liquid chocolate, and one post simply advises trying a few gelaterias and seeing which one wins you over. After that come mortadella and pasta: the number 4 sandwich at Mò Mortadella Lab, tortellini in broth, and meat carved from a trolley at Ristorante Da Bertino e Figli.

Seventeen of the 34 Bologna places on MapDreamy are restaurants, six are bakeries or dessert shops and seven are sights. Most of the addresses cluster in the old center, around Piazza Maggiore, the Quadrilatero market streets and Via Santo Stefano. Prices stay mostly moderate, with cheap slices and sandwiches at one end and Ristorante Rodrigo, known for grilled fish and listed as expensive, at the other.

Gelato and pastry

Cremeria Cavour, which holds Gambero Rosso's Three Cones, is the benchmark in the posts, and one of them features its Bolognese Cream flavor. Cremeria La Vecchia Stalla on Via Santo Stefano makes La Valle dei Templi with almonds and pistachio and will top a cone with praline. La Sorbetteria Castiglione, at Via Castiglione 44, shows its production in an open lab, and a post features its Dolce Emma. For pastry, Paolo Atti & Figli has made bread and pasta since 1880, and a creator suggests its torta di riso, a local classic. Pasticceria Impero on Via dell'Indipendenza and Roxy Bar on Via Rizzoli, a pastry shop, gelato counter and wine bar in one, round out the sweets.

Trattorias, sandwiches and cheap slices

Da Bertino, open since 1957, is known for roasted and boiled meats carved tableside by the owner, along with tortellini in broth and tagliatelle al ragù. Ristorante Da Fabio on Via del Cestello also does tortellini in brodo, with a celery salad on the side. Lunch can be quick and cheap: Pizzeria Due Torri sells slices for €1.70 according to one post, and Crunchy on Via Fondazza serves croissants, panini and pasta, though its note warns pasta is not always on the menu (owner Gianluca makes dishes on request). Grazing works too, at the stalls of Mercato di Mezzo or over meat and cheese boards at La Prosciutteria.

A walk from Piazza Maggiore

One creator says to start at Piazza Maggiore, where the Basilica di San Petronio shows an unfinished facade, marble on the lower part and raw brick above. Next door, local tradition has people circle Giambologna's Fontana del Nettuno for luck. The two medieval towers of Le Due Torri are visible from all over the historic center, a post notes. Then look for the small window on Via Piella, the Finestrella, which opens onto the Canale delle Moline, a view known as Bologna's little Venice. MAMbo, in a former industrial bakery, holds post-war Italian art.

Good to know

Cremeria Cavour is the most posted gelateria, with its Alice flavor and a Three Cones rating from Gambero Rosso. Creators also post Cremeria La Vecchia Stalla on Via Santo Stefano and La Sorbetteria Castiglione on Via Castiglione. One creator's advice is to try several and decide for yourself, which is easy when all three sit in the center.
