Towns and Villages in Portugal From TikTok: Porto and Madeira
This list comes from two places, the Douro riverfront in Porto and the islands of Madeira. One Porto video covers both banks of the river: the Ribeira district with its stacked medieval houses, the Cais da Ribeira promenade below it, and Cais de Gaia across the water, home to the old Port wine trade and the Gaia cable car. All three are free to walk.
Madeira is the other half. An itinerary video from the island stops at Achadas da Cruz, where a cable car drops down the cliff to a pebble beach, and at Ribeira da Janela, named for a rock with a window-like opening. Porto Santo, the neighboring island, is the beach option, with nine kilometers of golden sand.

Where creators go
- Ribeira
Porto's riverside district of colorful medieval buildings and narrow lanes, with Praça da Ribeira, the Casa do Infante and views of the Luís I Bridge. Six Bridges river cruises leave from here. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage area and appears in a creator's Porto and Douro video.
- Cais de Gaia
The Vila Nova de Gaia side of the Douro, a riverside walk with views back across to Porto's old center, restaurants and the old Port wine trade. Boat trips up the Douro start here, rabelo boats used to dock here, and it connects to the Gaia cable car. Free to walk, and the same video as the Ribeira.
- Cais da Ribeira
The riverfront promenade at the foot of the Ribeira, lined with stacked houses, traditional barcos rabelos on the water, riverside restaurants and buskers. The listing points to sunset as the time for a stroll. Count it and the Ribeira district as one walk.
- Achadas da Cruz
A small village on Madeira's cliffs where the Teleférico das Achadas da Cruz cable car descends to a secluded pebble beach and a few coastal houses. It is the first stop pinned in a creator's Madeira itinerary video. Free to visit; the cable car ride is the point.
- Ribeira da Janela
A coastal parish on Madeira with the island's longest stream, a pebble beach with facilities and the rock formation with a window-like gap that gives it its name. The Levada dos Cedros hike starts here, and it has the island's only public campsite. It is in the same Madeira itinerary as Achadas da Cruz.
- Porto Santo
The neighboring island in the Madeira archipelago, known for a 9 km golden sand beach whose sand is said to have therapeutic properties. A creator offers a Porto Santo guide with beaches, hikes and viewpoints. Pick it if Madeira's pebble beaches leave you wanting sand.

Both banks of the Douro in Porto
Ribeira, Cais da Ribeira and Cais de Gaia face each other across the river and are best done as one walk, crossing by the Luís I Bridge. Start on the Porto side for the lanes and Praça da Ribeira, then cross to Gaia for the view back and the cable car.
Madeira's north coast and Porto Santo
Achadas da Cruz and Ribeira da Janela come from one itinerary video and sit on the same northwest stretch of Madeira's coast: a cable car descent in one, a rock window and a pebble beach in the other. Porto Santo is a separate island trip.
Good to know
Ribeira is Porto's old riverside district, with medieval houses, Praça da Ribeira and the Casa do Infante. Cais de Gaia is on the opposite bank in Vila Nova de Gaia, a promenade with views back to Porto, Douro boat departures and the Gaia cable car. A single creator video covers both.
