Mexico From TikTok: Mexico City and a Few Escapes
Almost all of this map is one city. Of the 126 places creators posted in Mexico, 110 are in Mexico City, and the two most posted, with 4 posts each, are a seafood spot and a museum. At Mi Compa Chava Marisquería in Roma Norte, a Sinaloa-style kitchen, creators call the fish taco massive and the record advises arriving early to avoid long queues. Museo Jumex, in a David Chipperfield building, is free.
Within the capital, the posts split in two. Roma Norte supplies most of the food, from Contramar and its tuna tostadas to a taco stand that never closes, while the museums and galleries gather in Miguel Hidalgo around Chapultepec. The few places outside the city are trips in themselves: thermal pools in a Hidalgo canyon, a house shaped like a feathered serpent, and a cliff-backed cove in Puerto Escondido.
Roma Norte, street by street
Several of the food picks share one neighborhood. Contramar on Durango is a daytime seafood institution where reservations are highly recommended. Expendio de Maíz Sin Nombre on Avenida Yucatán has no fixed menu: dishes built on heirloom corn keep coming until you say you are done, and it is walk-in only and cash only. Panadería Rosetta on Colima is known for its guava roll, with queues on weekends. BUNA roasts Mexican coffee and makes a cold brew horchata called Cafechata. Cursi is a punk steakhouse open until 1:30 AM most nights, and Taquería El Gato Volador, at Obregón and Insurgentes, is open 24 hours.
Museums and galleries around Chapultepec
The art posts center on Miguel Hidalgo. Museo Jumex and Museo Soumaya, the silver-tiled building with Rodin and Dalí works, are on the same boulevard and both free. Museo Tamayo, a Brutalist building in Chapultepec Park, is free on Sundays. For the Castillo de Chapultepec, buy tickets at the base of the hill before you go up. The gallery kurimanzutto shows contemporary art in a former bakery and lumberyard, and LagoAlgo pairs exhibitions with a farm-to-table restaurant in a 1960s building on Lago Mayor. Elsewhere, the Frida Kahlo museum in Coyoacán needs tickets in advance.
Outside Mexico City
Grutas Tolantongo in Hidalgo has tiered thermal pools, warm caves and a canyon waterfall; it is cash only, and one creator says to arrive at 5:00 AM to beat the crowds for the tour van. El Nido de Quetzalcóatl in Naucalpan, Javier Senosiain's house shaped like a coiling serpent, can only be visited on private tours or overnight stays. On the Oaxaca coast, Playa Carrizalillo in Puerto Escondido sits at the bottom of roughly 150 to 170 steps, with calm water for swimming and beginner surfing; a creator says it has the bluest water.
Good to know
La Once Mil in Lomas de Chapultepec serves A5 Wagyu and suckling pig on handmade tortillas, walk-in only; one creator calls them the best tacos they have had and worth the wait. Taquería El Turix in Polanco does cochinita pibil, often eaten standing up. Taquería El Gato Volador in Roma Norte is open 24 hours for campechano and steak tacos.
