Mexico City on TikTok: Tacos, Museums and Roma Norte

Creators who film Mexico City split their time between taco counters and museums. Of the 110 places on the site, 41 are restaurants and 24 are sights and museums, and the posts keep returning to Roma Norte for food and to Chapultepec for art. Mi Compa Chava Marisquería on Zacatecas leads with four posts, one of which calls its fish taco massive. Museo Jumex, a free contemporary art museum designed by David Chipperfield, has four as well.

Behind them comes a long run of places with two or three posts each: Contramar for tuna tostadas with chipotle mayo and grilled pescado a la talla, the suspended bookshelves of Biblioteca Vasconcelos, and La Once Mil, a walk-in-only taquería where one creator says the tacos were the best they have ever had and worth the wait.

Tacos, from street corners to Wagyu

The cheapest meals in this set are tacos. Taquería El Gato Volador stands at the corner of Obregón and Insurgentes, is listed as open 24 hours, and creators point to its campechano, its steak and the longaniza with cheese. On the same avenue, Taquería Orinoco makes northern-style flour tortillas and costra tacos wrapped in crispy melted cheese; expect a line at peak hours. In Polanco, Taquería El Turix is a no-frills taco joint for cochinita pibil and panuchos, where many people eat standing up. For a pricier taco, La Once Mil puts A5 Wagyu on handmade tortillas, and the spicy tuna and trompo tacos are the ones creators single out.

Sit-down meals in Roma and Condesa

Roma Norte holds the largest share of the sit-down restaurants in the videos. At Expendio de Maíz Sin Nombre on Avenida Yucatán there is no fixed menu: the kitchen keeps bringing dishes built on heirloom corn until you say you are done, and it is walk-in only and cash only. Voraz, in a former automotive workshop in Roma Sur, is remembered for its salty churro with cotija, a tuna tostada and a chocolate tamal. Cursi is a graffiti-covered steakhouse that one post says stays open until 1:30 AM most nights. Botánico in Condesa seats diners on a garden patio with cacti and axolotls, and San Ángel Inn serves mole and margaritas in silver goblets inside a 17th-century hacienda.

Museums and galleries, several of them free

Museo Soumaya shares a boulevard in Granada with Jumex and is also free, with Rodin and Dalí works inside a silver-tiled building. Chapultepec Park holds several more: Museo Tamayo, a Brutalist building with free entry on Sundays; the castle on Chapultepec Hill, where tickets are sold at the bottom before the walk up; and LagoAlgo, a 1960s building with exhibitions and a restaurant facing Lago Mayor. Museo Frida Kahlo in Coyoacán needs tickets bought in advance. The gallery kurimanzutto fills a former bakery and lumberyard in San Miguel Chapultepec. Downtown, Palacio de Bellas Artes has murals by Diego Rivera, and the café in the nearby Sears building is a good spot to look at its marble exterior.

Good to know

Mi Compa Chava Marisquería, a Sinaloa-style seafood spot in Roma Norte, and Museo Jumex lead with four posts each. Biblioteca Vasconcelos, Contramar, kurimanzutto, La Once Mil, LagoAlgo, Museo Frida Kahlo, the Chapultepec castle and Museo Tamayo follow with three. Everything else on the city's list of 110 places has one or two.
