Hotels and Ryokan in Japan From Creators' Travel Videos
Hot springs connect a surprising number of these stays. A ryokan near Shimokitazawa runs communal onsen baths in the middle of Tokyo, several Kyoto hotels have private or natural hot spring baths, a Gero inn offers nine private baths you can reserve, and a Hokkaido ski hotel links to an onsen by indoor walkway. The rest lean on design: a former bank, the upper floors of a MUJI store, a 1926 Art Deco building.
Kyoto has eight of the 14 hotels, three of them in Higashiyama, close to Kiyomizu-dera, the Miyagawa-cho geisha district and the Yasaka Pagoda. Tokyo has four. This is not a budget list: eleven are marked luxury, and the three marked expensive, Ace Hotel Kyoto, K5 and Gero Onsen Ogawaya, are the most affordable here.

Where creators go
- Yuen Bettei Daita
The most posted stay on this page: a ryokan on a greenway near Shimokitazawa in Setagaya, built to feel like a countryside hot spring inn inside Tokyo. Rooms are minimal, with tatami and pine furniture, and there are communal onsen baths and mist saunas. One creator's heads-up: the traditional breakfast of miso soup and salmon is served at 8:00 AM, so plan your morning around it.
- The Vale Rusutsu
A ski-in, ski-out condo hotel at the base of Rusutsu's West Mountain in Hokkaido, voted Japan's Best Ski Hotel in 2024. The creator calls it the craziest hotel in Japan and lays out the trip: a flight to Hokkaido, then a two-hour bus to Rusutsu. Suites sleep up to eight, some have private rooftop hot tubs, and an indoor walkway leads to Kotobuki Onsen.
- Gero Onsen Ogawaya
A traditional ryokan in the Gero Onsen hot spring town in Gifu. The creator notes details that matter for families and older travelers: non-slip tatami floors, nine private baths you can book, and open-air baths in the rooms. It is a short walk from the main hot spring town, and one of the three non-luxury stays here.
- Capella Kyoto
A hotel by Kengo Kuma & Associates in Miyagawa-cho, the Kyoto geisha district, designed around the idea of machiya townhouses. Six Onsen Suites have private hot spring baths, guests can access the restored Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre, and rooms look toward the Higashiyama skyline and the Yasaka Pagoda.
- Nazuna Kyoto Gosho
A seven-room ryokan made from two renovated machiya townhouses in Kyoto, with a private open-air onsen bath in every room. Tea and snacks are served around the clock and breakfast is home-cooked Japanese food. It appears in a personal Japan guide alongside Yuen Bettei Daita and suits travelers who want their own bath.
- Yoshikawa
A culinary ryokan in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, where the stay centers on the tempura restaurant and tempura-focused kaiseki. Rooms are tatami, the building is sukiya style, and the Taikyoen garden is attributed to Kobori Enshu. Reservations are highly recommended. Choose it if dinner is the main reason for the trip.
- MUJI HOTEL GINZA
A hotel on the upper floors of the world's largest MUJI store in Ginza. Rooms follow the brand's simple, functional design and come with MUJI bath products and air purifiers. For shoppers, the location in the Ginza district is the selling point; it is in the same personal Japan guide as K5 and TRUNK(HOTEL).
- Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto
A 52-room hillside hotel in Higashiyama near Kiyomizu-dera, with a natural hot spring, a bamboo grove and the Ryozen Japanese restaurant. It claims the only Noh stage in any Kyoto hotel. One of five Kyoto hotels in a post about lantern-lit streets, quiet temples and very good matcha.

More Kyoto hotels near the sights
Four more Kyoto hotels round out the city's eight, each placed close to a major sight.
- Park Hyatt Kyoto: in Higashiyama near Ninenzaka and Kiyomizu-dera, with Michelin-starred dining at Yasaka, a spa and a bathhouse.
- Aman Kyoto: suites and pavilions in a 32-hectare private forest near the Golden Pavilion, with mineral hot springs, Zen meditation and tea ceremonies.
- Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto: a 25-room hotel next to Nijo Castle with a MICHELIN Key and French cooking from seasonal ingredients.
- Ace Hotel Kyoto: a 1926 Art Deco building in central Kyoto with an art-filled lobby, a sunken lounge and a lobby bar, marked expensive rather than luxury.
Design hotels in Tokyo
Two more Tokyo stays come from the same personal Japan guide. K5 fills a renovated former bank building in the Nihonbashi Kabuto-cho financial district, with a bar, a restaurant and high-ceiling studio rooms. TRUNK(HOTEL) YOYOGI PARK in Tomigaya, Shibuya, has a rooftop pool and jacuzzi; check-in is at 15:00 and check-out at noon.
Good to know
Yuen Bettei Daita in Tokyo is the only stay posted twice in this set, for its hot spring baths near Shimokitazawa. The Vale Rusutsu in Hokkaido gets a dedicated post calling it the craziest hotel in Japan. In Kyoto, Capella, Banyan Tree, Park Hyatt, Aman and Garrya Nijo Castle all appear in one post about the city.
