Japan From TikTok: Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo Wards
Kyoto leads Japan on MapDreamy with 38 of 121 places, and old townhouses keep turning up in its videos. Le Labo Kyoto Machiya sells fragrance in an 1879 machiya with a café, tatami rooms and a garden. Charlie serves hayashi rice and gyoza in another renovated townhouse, whose upstairs is themed like a child's bedroom, and Capella Kyoto, by Kengo Kuma & Associates, reimagines the machiya as a hotel in the Miyagawa-cho geisha district.
No place in Japan has more than 2 posts, so this is a wide list rather than a short one. Osaka has 11 places. Tokyo is split by ward and neighborhood, so look under Shinjuku (7), Chuo (5), Ginza (4), Setagaya City (4), Shibuya City (3) and the general Tokyo page (3).
Kyoto's shrines, coffee and vintage
The classic sights are here, Fushimi Inari-taisha with its tunnels of red torii gates up the mountain and the free Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, but the posts go further. Nishiki Market, the 400-meter arcade called Kyoto's Kitchen, is best on weekday mornings before 10:30 according to its record. % Arabica on the road to Yasaka Pagoda serves the Kyoto Latte in a small, often crowded space. At Chinese Noodles ROKU, a Bib Gourmand ramen counter, one creator suggests coming around 6:30 PM to skip the queue and dropping the steamed dumplings into the soup. COIL, a vintage store that opens at 1:00 PM, is one creator's favorite shop in the city.
Osaka, mostly snacks
Osaka's picks are small and specific. Sengyo Uotoyo in Kuromon Market grills Kansai-style eel over binchotan, seats six and takes cash only. Salmon Kat Namba, a short walk from Namba Station, serves generous salmon bowls. Amanojaku, a take-out crepe shop on the Tenjinbashi-suji shopping street, does a maple cream crepe and a creme brulee version. Amsu Tea House offers sweet soda teas and black tea affogato, and one creator describes an unlimited tea service, with staff refilling your cup with different teas when it is not busy.
Tokyo, and a detour to Fukui
In Tokyo, the conveyor-belt sushi bar 廻転鮨 銀座おのでら 本店 near Omotesando Station draws a line, so a creator suggests arriving early. Blue Entrance Kitchen in Meguro serves a Wagyu cheese birria taco for 1,380 yen, and one is usually enough. FORNO in Nishiazabu grills Wagyu over wood for 18 seats on a course menu. Yuen Bettei Daita, a ryokan with communal onsen baths near Shimokitazawa, serves a traditional breakfast at 8:00 AM. Far from the big cities, Echizen Daibutsu in Katsuyama, Fukui, holds a 17-meter seated Buddha; a creator gives entry as 500 yen, open 9:00 to 17:00, with free parking.
Good to know
Tokyo places are filed by ward or neighborhood rather than under one city page. Shinjuku has 7, Chuo 5, Ginza and Setagaya City 4 each, Shibuya City and the general Tokyo page 3 each, and areas such as Jingūmae, Nishiazabu and Ikebukuro have one or two. The Japan country page lists them all together.
