Germany From TikTok: Munich, Lakes and Alpine Days

Munich is the center of gravity here. Of the 158 places on MapDreamy's Germany map, 82 are in Munich, against 19 in Berlin and 8 in Hamburg. The single most posted spot is not in a city at all, though. ARAN Schlosscafé on the Tegernsee waterfront has 8 posts: a self-service café known for fresh bread with handmade spreads and a garden terrace that looks out over the lake and mountains.

Most other places have one or two posts each, and together they read like a Bavarian long weekend. There are Alpine lakes such as Eibsee at the foot of the Zugspitze, Neuschwanstein Castle, warm brine pools in Bad Reichenhall, and in Munich itself a run of birria tacos, smash burgers, izakaya plates and natural wine.

Eating and drinking in Munich

The Munich posts are casual and international. Taqueria con Salsa, inside the FAT CAT cultural center on Rosenheimer Straße, does slow-cooked birria (vegan too) and takes cards only; one creator points to the Carnita de Suadero. Smash It, a halal smash burger spot in Haidhausen, got a 12/10 from one creator. J-Bar on Maistraße is a small izakaya with frozen beer, cash only and no reservations. Blaue Libelle on Hans-Sachs-Straße pours over 100 biodynamic and natural wines next to Mediterranean sharing plates. At the ASTOR Film Lounge, pretzels with Obazda come to your seat, and a creator puts tickets at around 15€.

Around Lake Tegernsee

Four places ring one lake. Besides ARAN in Tegernsee, there is Käfer Gut Kaltenbrunn in Gmund am Tegernsee, a 15th-century estate with a seasonal beer garden; one creator suggests lunch with the lake view, then the beach bar. Mangfallblau, also in Gmund, serves breakfast and lunch inside the Gmund paper mill, which its record calls the first restaurant in a paper factory, and a creator posts it as a brunch stop. MIZU Onsen Spa near Rottach-Egern is a Japanese-inspired spa inside the Bachmair Weissach resort, open to day guests and for adults only.

Alpine lakes, a castle and warm water

Eibsee has a 7 km trail around the lake, SUP and boat rentals, and free access. Schrecksee, above Bad Hindelang at 1,813 meters, is listed as Germany's highest alpine lake and is often in fog. Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau can only be seen inside on a guided tour, and its record recommends booking online. In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Das Graseck lodge has a spa that looks over the Partnachklamm gorge. For an evening, one creator suggests the RupertusTherme in Bad Reichenhall, open until 22:00, after a day at Königssee, Hintersee or the Kehlsteinhaus.

Good to know

J-Bar, the Munich izakaya, is cash only and takes no reservations. Two other Munich places work the other way: Taqueria con Salsa and the Korean restaurant 89Anju accept cards only. Most other records on the Germany page say nothing about payment, so it is worth checking before you go.
